Overview

Theme of the 4th Seminar: Improvisation as a tool for professional and artistic practice, practice based research and innovations in teaching and learning. Important sources of inspiration for teachers were also explored

This seminar held in May 2011 and directed by Helena Gaunt and Bart van Rosmalen, brought together over 28 teachers from Conservatoires and music academies across Europe and Australia, enabling them to explore in depth questions including:

  • Important sources of inspiration in the development of participants as teachers and musicians
  • Improvisation as a tool for professional and artistic development
  • Practice-based research and innovations in teaching and learning.

Examples of participant projects explored included:

  • Using the work form of dramatising feedback on 1-2-1 teaching within a pedagogy course
  • Development of practice-based research at the Royal Conservatory the Hague
  • Taking the lead in articulating curricula for students, staff, administration and governance
  • Mentoring development project
  • Improvisation network
  • Connecting ICON to a new course for students focusing on innovative teaching methods
  • Practising & performing, health & well-being
  • Exploring the principles and practices of coaching/mentoring in teaching
  • Co-teaching as co-learning
