Inspiration

Two circles

“I am not here to buttress your egos; I am here to destroy them. I have to speak against them. My whole work consists in destroying. First a great destruction is needed, only then your energies are released for some creative work.”

My inspiration is a book: Osho’s Maturity, The Responsibility of Being Oneself. It’s a book I was reading at the time of the seminar, and took it with me to the airplane. I had the feeling, that there has to be something in there. As I was sitting in the aeroplane, still with no ideas, I started to look at the cover of the book.

There are two circles there. For me the lower circle symbolises a teacher. Upper one symbolises a student. They are connected and the information, teaching and energy goes both ways. From teacher to student and vice versa. For me it also symbolises the situation, what is now common and not so usual, when I started to study my instrument. These days the teacher would be authority, and the student someone, who obeys without questioning. I was always the annoying student, who had too many questions. I had too much time the feeling, that me as a teacher is not this kind of authority person that used to be teacher in old times. I felt myself more like a friend or like someone, who is in the same boat, but not as someone, who is much better, than a student and nor someone, who knows answers to every question. So for me, the picture also symbolises kind of equality between a student and a teacher.

There are two letters in the cover. S means separate for me. Teacher and student have to be different, they both have their own way of seeing things. It has to be separate, in order to achieve the result. The student can´t be taught to be similar as the teacher, because then we as teachers make copies. But we should open students, that they could be originals. Every person has inside this originality, and it can come out only then, when teacher does not want to make the student similar to her.

The letter H means Harmony. (It took some time, to think out of this word.) Harmony is in the teacher’s circle. Teacher is the one who creates an environment, where the student can start to discover, grow, or find his originality. The environment has to be harmonious, otherwise it’s really hard to teach something, when the environment is not supporting. For me creating a harmonious environment for student is sometimes most important. Then you can open the inner motivation and teaching and learning can be fun!

It’s funny, that I used only the cover of the book. I really admire Osho’s work. Here is a quotation of his:

“I am not here to buttress your egos; I am here to destroy them. I have to speak against them. My whole work consists in destroying. First a great destruction is needed, only then your energies are released for some creative work.”

Now I will use not only the cover but also the content of the book.

In one of Ann’s workshops we had to describe our best teacher ever and then describe what was so remarkable in him and if we could put that characteristic in one word? I described a young man, who gave thought psychology of learning. Why was he so remarkable? He destroyed everything I knew about habitual learning, stereotypical teacher, stereotypical student, stereotypical lesson and exam. Everything went upside down and because of him I started to see a wider picture. I started to enjoy risks, I stared to laugh at my limitation, I started to live and to be responsible. The word, what was most remarkable in him, was earthquake. I’m still amazed, how much one semester of he’s lessons opened me as a person. Osho has the same value for me. You must start thinking, when you read he´s book. It is hardly impossible to read his texts without revaluing your common thinking. My aim as being a teacher is the same. To create an earthquake in order to show the wider picture. The earthquake can be created in both sides, by student, or by teacher, there is actually no difference. Being humans we are in the same boat anyway. So again the equality between teacher and student. They both learn, if they are opened enough, during the studying relationship period.

If I should add one image, it would be this:

This is my earthquake teacher, Kristjan Puusild.

There are also the circles. Harmony and separate. He is not an ordinary teacher. Thank God for that.
