Biography

Flutist Ilona Meija began her musical career in Limbazi, Latvia,continuing her studies at the Jazepa Medina Music High School and the Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music in Riga. In 1991,the year Latvia regained its dependence from the Soviet Union, she placed first in the flutist group in the Andreja Jurjana competition.The same year Ilona joined the Latvian National Symphony orchestra as the piccolo flutist.In 1993 her dream to play in a chamber orchestra was fulfilled.From 1993 to 2006 she played with the Riga Chamberplayers and then by withstanding stiff competition , she joined Sinfonietta Riga as principal flutist.She finds time to teach- in the faculty of Jazeps Vitols Latvian Academy of Music Ilona Meija is professor for flute, chamber music and orchestra repertoire in the groups.
